Farrier's Cottage
A three bedroom stone cottage dating back to 1675
Sedbergh 7 miles. Hawes 9 miles.
Farrier's Cottage is a semi-detached stone cottage in Garsdale, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It began life in 1675 as a blacksmith's cottage and workshop, and it still has the solid feel of a working building — thick stone walls, solid wood and slate floors, and windows that look straight out across the dale.
It sleeps six across three bedrooms, which makes it a good fit for a family, two or three couples travelling together, or a group of walkers who want somewhere comfortable to come back to.
The sitting room has a stone fireplace with a woodburning stove and leather sofas facing it — the obvious place to end up after a wet day on the fells. There is a separate dining room with a table seating six, a well-equipped kitchen, and a utility room with a washing machine, tumble dryer and a flagged floor, which is exactly what you want for boots and a damp dog. A shower room on the ground floor means you don't have to traipse upstairs to clean up.
Upstairs are three bedrooms — a king-size double, a second double, and a twin — along with the family bathroom, which has a bath with a shower over it. The rooms are furnished with antiques and look out over the fields and fells.
Outside there is a lawned front garden with a table and chairs, off-road parking for two cars, and somewhere dry to put the bikes. The garden is not enclosed, and there is a public right of way across the front, so dogs need to be kept under control.
This is quiet country. There are walks in every direction — up onto the fells, along the river, or over towards Grisedale, the neighbouring valley known as "The Dale That Died". The riverbanks nearby are one of the better places in England to see red squirrels, and guests regularly report rabbits on the lawn, roe deer, and plenty of birds. With no street lighting anywhere in the dale, the night skies are worth staying up for.
Sedbergh (7 miles) is the nearest town, known for its bookshops, and it has pubs, cafes and a weekly market. Farfield Mill arts centre is on the road in. Hawes (9 miles) has the Wensleydale Creamery, the Dales Countryside Museum and the ropemakers. Our things to do page covers waterfalls, castles, caves and family days out, and the Sedgwick Geological Trail at Danny Bridge is a short and interesting walk if the weather turns.
Garsdale Station on the Settle–Carlisle line is a few minutes up the dale — one of the most scenic railway journeys in the country, and a good day out in its own right. The Lake District is easily reached too, with Windermere around 27 miles away.
Book direct through this site and you deal directly with the property owner — no agency fees, no booking commissions, and the personal service that comes from speaking to someone who knows the cottage and the area inside out. When you book through sites like Booking.com or Sykes, they take a significant cut of the price, which either inflates what you pay or reduces what the owner receives. Booking here means a better deal for everyone.
