About
Sedbergh 6.4 miles. Hawes 9 miles. Kendal 17 miles.
The Old Cart House is a detached stone cottage in Garsdale, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It was originally a cart house and stables — there is an Ordnance Survey benchmark cut into the stonework from the 1845 survey, when it was listed as J Davis’ stable.
It sleeps two (a couple, or two adults with one small child up to age 3), with roadside parking and countryside views up the valley.
Downstairs is an open-plan living space with exposed wooden beams and a vaulted ceiling. There is an electric fire, a dining table for two, and a kitchen area fitted under the staircase with an oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer and washing machine. The timber staircase leads to a window seat on the half-landing with views over the dale.
The king-size bedroom has exposed wood and a reclaimed stable door opening onto an en-suite shower room. There is also a rear door from the bedroom leading via stone steps down to the garden patio, where you can eat outside.
Walks start from the door — the Pennine Bridleway and Dales Way are both nearby, and there are marked footpaths through the dale. The riverbanks opposite the cottage are a good spot for red squirrels, and you may also see roe deer, brown hares and a wide range of birds. On clear nights, the dark skies here are remarkable — no street lighting, and the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye.
Sedbergh (6.4 miles) has independent bookshops, craft shops, pubs and cafes, a weekly Wednesday market, and Farfield Mill arts centre on the road between here and town. Hawes (9 miles) has the Wensleydale Creamery, the Dales Countryside Museum, and plenty of places to eat. Garsdale Station on the Settle-Carlisle line is a short drive up the dale. See our things to do page for waterfalls, castles, caves, family activities and more.
The nearby Sedgwick Geological Trail at Danny Bridge traces the ancient Dent Fault along the River Clough — named after the geologist Adam Sedgwick, who was born in nearby Dent. The Lake District is also within reach for a day trip, with Ambleside about 45 minutes’ drive.
Book direct through this site and you deal directly with the property owners, Jack and Loraine — no agency fees, no booking commissions, and the personal service that comes from speaking to people who know the cottage and the area inside out. When you book through sites like Booking.com or Sykes, they take a significant cut of the price, which either inflates what you pay or reduces what the owner receives. Booking here means a better deal for everyone.

Everything was really lovely and cosy. Super clean, lovely and warm despite the very wintery weather outside. Shower and bathroom were lovely. We cooked most of our meals in the oven and used the hob and both were easy to use, worked well and with good instructions in the welcome pack. Loved the cute little espresso mugs too. It was a lovely location near Sedbergh, very easy to get to and find surrounded by the beautiful rolling hills. We hope to return.

The old cart house has been beautifully restored but retains it's character. We were able to park right outside. The road is very quiet both day and night. Lots of walks and places to visit close by. Kirby Lonsdale and Hawes are both worth a visit.

The cottage has a wonderful atmosphere, set in a very quiet village and provides a great gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. It is also a great base to explore the Dales, including completing the drive through the Buttertubs pass. It is on the main road but there is very little traffic during the day and next to none during the night, so very quiet.

Loraine and Jack were so attentive and even had a corkscrew delivered to us (priorities!). The old cart house is a delightful place to spend time with your loved ones, we’ll definitely be back!

Checking in was a breeze, the property is beautiful and perfect for a countryside getaway. The road really is no problem when it comes to the on street parking despite it being listed as an A road, and everything you need is in the house. We will be back, thank you so much!

It's an ideal location for exploring this side of the Dales on foot, by bike or by car. Parking is easy and although it is on a main road there is very little traffic and it is very quiet! The 'welcome basket' was much appreciated.

Particular highlights were generous welcome basket and best of all, and virtually unheard of in holiday accommodation, luxurious bath sheets instead of stupid little towels! And bedding and towels were not the ubiquitous white / hotel like norm….it really felt like a home. Great location - very comfortable - excellent value.
