Brigflatts Meeting House

Brigflatts Meeting House, just outside Sedbergh, was built in 1675 and is one of the oldest Quaker meeting houses in the country. It is still in use today and well worth a visit. George Fox visited Sedbergh in 1652 and found a community of Seekers already looking for a different way to worship; the movement spread rapidly through these dales, and the area is sometimes known as 1652 Country. Garsdale itself once had Quaker meeting houses at Birkrigg (1703-1900) and Stubstacks in neighbouring Grisedale (1706-1870). Brigflatts is a quiet, atmospheric building of stone, wood and whitewash, and a useful link to a story that runs deep through the local history.
