Cumbrian Heavy Horses is an award-winning, BHS-approved heavy horse riding centre based in the south-west of the Lake District National Park, near Millom, and it is the only BHS-approved heavy horse riding centre in the world. You ride the largest breeds of horse there are - Suffolk Punch, Clydesdale and Shire - on fell, farm and beach. The centre is also a rare breed centre, working with some of the rarer heavy horse bloodlines.
Rides suit a range of abilities. There is a farm ride for those who want a gentler experience, fell rides covering the Duddon Valley and areas of wild fell land, and beach riding along the western Lake District coastline for confident, experienced riders. It is run by Annie and her team, and the horses are clearly well looked after, which shows in the reviews. It is a fair drive from Garsdale - around an hour and a quarter - but it is a day out you remember, and a good pairing with a wider Lakes trip if you are based in the Dales.
