Dandrymire Viaduct

The Dandrymire Viaduct, also known as the Moorcock Viaduct, carries the Settle-Carlisle railway across the head of Garsdale. It has twelve arches, stands about fifty feet high and stretches for 227 yards - a spectacular feat of Victorian engineering, and one of the notable structures of the line. It is visible from the Moorcock Inn at Garsdale Head and only a short walk away, and is also visible from the windows of Mount Zion Chapel, which was built in the same year as the railway and by the very contractors building the line. The line is still in use, including regular steam-hauled services. The Dandrymire is one of three large viaducts on the Settle-Carlisle that are worth seeing - the others being Ribblehead and Blea Moor.
