Settle to Stainforth

8.5 miles/13.7km | 5 hours | moderate

This circular walk starts in Settle, the market town at the southern end of the Settle-Carlisle railway, and follows limestone scars, caves and potholes through to Stainforth before returning. The route ventures beneath Attermire Scar, beyond Catrigg Force - a hidden waterfall in a wooded gorge - to Stainforth, and returns via Stainforth Force on the River Ribble.

Settle is about 45 minutes' drive from Garsdale, or you can get there by train from Garsdale station, which is on the same Settle-Carlisle line - the walk to Stainforth makes a good day out if you come by rail. Settle has pubs, cafes and shops, and the station itself is lovingly restored. The Malham Tarn walk is nearby for a gentler option.
