Dale Head Community Garage in Hawes is a community-owned, not-for-profit filling station on the A684 in the town centre - and it was the first community-run filling station in the country. Because it is community-owned and entitled to a 5p per litre Government rural fuel rebate, it keeps its prices below the national average, and the fuel is dispensed twenty-four hours a day with a card-payment kiosk. It is a genuinely useful thing to have in a town where the nearest alternative petrol stations are a fair drive away.
The kiosk is staffed during the day, and the garage sits at Town Head on the A684, a short walk from the Market House and the Dales Countryside Museum. For fuel closer to Garsdale, D T Close in Sedbergh is about fifteen minutes down the dale.
