Kirkby Lonsdale's Market Square is an elegant Georgian square at the heart of the town, and it hosts the Thursday Charter Market, which has been running in one form or another since the town was granted a Market Charter in 1227. The original market was at the corner of Main Street and Market Street before being relocated to the square, which is overlooked at one end by the Royal Hotel - made famous by a visit by Queen Adelaide in 1840 - and at the other by the old bank.
The Thursday market has a wide range of stallholders selling local produce, artisan breads, a hog roast, wines, fruit and vegetables, street food, arts and crafts, plants and flowers, homewares, herbs, pottery and cakes. It is a popular local market and the square itself is worth seeing even on a non-market day, with its Georgian frontages and Independent shops around the edges. Collinge Opticians sits on Market Street nearby.
