The Sportsman's Inn, Cowgill

The Sportsman's Inn at Cowgill is a family-owned seventeenth-century Grade II listed country inn in Dentdale, accessible over the Coal Road past Garsdale Station - a very scenic high route that crosses open moorland and brings you down into Dentdale. The inn sits on the Dales Way and is close to Dent station on the Settle-Carlisle line, making it a useful pub for walkers, cyclists and rail travellers combining different parts of the Dales on a single itinerary. Dent itself is a pretty village with a cobbled main street, lovely walks and a good range of cafes and tea rooms - a longer visit can take in the Sedgwick Geological Trail at Danny Bridge and the memorial to Adam Sedgwick, born in Dent in 1785. The Sportsman's is one of the dog-friendly pubs in the area, the more so since Dentdale is a walkable day out from the cottages.
