10.2 miles/16.5km | 6 hours | moderate
This walk takes you from Keld, high in Upper Swaledale, to the Tan Hill Inn - Britain's highest public house at 528 metres (1,732 feet), and the only pub in England that is so remote it has been completely cut off by snow in winter. The inn has exposed beams, a stone-flagged floor and a welcoming fire, and walkers brush shoulders with inquisitive tourists who have driven up the long, lonely road from Arkengarthdale.
The route follows the Pennine Way and moorland paths across the head of Arkengarthdale, where winds rush across open moorland. Keld itself is a tiny village at the confluence of the River Swale and Birkdale Beck, surrounded by waterfalls - Kisdon Force, Wain Wath Force and Catrake Force are all within walking distance. Keld is about 50 minutes' drive from Garsdale.
