The Sleepy Elephant is a walking and book shop on Main Street in Sedbergh, in a building that may date back to the fifteenth century. It specialises in good quality but affordable walking boots and other hiking equipment, plus new and second-hand walking and mountaineering books. The boot range comes from brands including Aku, Grisport, Keen, Lowa and others, in sizes 3 to 13, and the shop is known for its clearance sales where you can pick up famous-name kit at the right price. They also stock jackets, trekking pants, wellies, sandals, socks, gloves, hats, walking poles and the rest of the kit you actually need for a week on the fells.
It sits at 41 Main Street, between the Dalesman and the Black Bull, and the staff give sound advice on boots and routes - they know the Howgills and the Dales well. If you forgot your boots or your old pair has had it, this is the place in Sedbergh to sort it.
