The Dalesman Country Inn, Sedbergh

The Dalesman Country Inn is a pub and restaurant in Sedbergh, the nearest town to Garsdale, around six miles west down the A684. Unlike most of the local eating places listed elsewhere on this site, the Dalesman is not dog-friendly, so plan around that one if you are bringing your dog, and use the Black Bull, the Half and Half or one of the other dog-friendly options in Sedbergh instead. For non-dog guests, the Dalesman is within easy reach of the cottages and a useful local option for an evening meal without going far from the cottage. The Dalesman is a 16th-century coaching inn on Main Street in Sedbergh, in the centre of town and about five miles from junction 37 of the M6. It's an AA four-star Gold inn with two AA Rosettes for food, and it was Cumbria Pub of the Year in 2023, so the cooking is taken seriously. The sourcing is the thing that sets it apart - Brian at Birks Farm in Sedbergh supplies Galloway beef and rough fell lamb year round, grazed at Marthwaite then brought down to pasture in Sedbergh, and the travel from field to restaurant is less than thirty miles, which is almost unheard of anywhere in the UK. The kitchen works alongside local farmers and producers for the rest of the menu too.

As well as the bar and restaurant, the inn has rooms and distills its own Sedbergh Gin in small batches on the premises. There's a good range of craft beers and cask ales on the bar, and an outdoor seating area for fine weather. There is no parking on site, and it is not dog friendly, so plan around both if you are coming from one of our dog-friendly cottages.
