The Black Bull Inn, Sedbergh

The Black Bull is a pub in Sedbergh, the nearest town to Garsdale, roughly six miles west down the A684. It serves both meals and drinks, and it is one of several dog-friendly pubs and restaurants in the town, which makes it a convenient option for an evening meal without driving too far from the cottage. Sedbergh itself has a small weekly market on Wednesday mornings and artisan markets through the summer months, so a trip to the Black Bull can be combined with a browse of the bookshops, craft shops and the other eating places on the high street. The other dog friendly options in the same town are the Red Lion for meals and drinks, the Thirsty Rambler for drinks, and the Half and Half, which does drinks and runs a monthly acoustic night alongside occasional food nights.

The Black Bull is a 17th-century coaching inn on Main Street in Sedbergh, set at the foot of the Howgill Fells on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. James Ratcliffe and Nina Matsunaga run it together, and Nina's cooking has turned the place into a destination in its own right. She's German-born to Japanese parents, and her food is seasonal British produce - whole animals from the farm, fish from both coasts, game and foraged produce - influenced by her Japanese heritage and German upbringing. She sources mainly from what the inn calls the "Neck of Britain", running across Cumbria, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Northumbria. It draws people from a fair distance, which you wouldn't expect in a small Dales market town.

As well as the main restaurant and bar, the inn has 18 bedrooms, three of them dog friendly, and a separate fine-dining room called Tsuchi, where Nina runs a tasting menu built on the same seasonal British produce. There's also the Three Hares Café, tucked away in The Stables in the courtyard, serving all-day food from breakfast through to lunch - toasties, scotch eggs, homemade soups, cakes and coffee. The bar keeps its pub identity - wood-burning stoves, red-banquette seating, wooden floors - so you can come in for a drink without booking a table.

Sedbergh itself is a small historic market town within easy reach of the M6, and a useful stop if you're staying up the dale in Garsdale - about fifteen minutes' drive from Roger Pot. The Wednesday Sedbergh market runs in town too.
