The Red Lion, Sedbergh

The Red Lion is a pub in Sedbergh, the nearest town to Garsdale, roughly six miles west down the A684 and about fifteen minutes' drive from our holiday cottages. It serves both meals and drinks, and it is one of the dog friendly pubs in the town, so the dog can come in with you rather than wait in the car. That matters more than you would think in a walking area, because most people staying in a self-catering holiday cottage up the dale have been out on the fells all day and have a wet dog with them by teatime.

Eating and Drinking in Sedbergh with a Dog

Sedbergh is a small historic market town at the foot of the Howgill Fells, on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and it has more choice than a town its size usually manages. The Red Lion sits among that choice as a pub that does food as well as drinks, which is worth knowing if you want a sit-down meal rather than just a pint.

If the Red Lion is busy, the Black Bull also does meals and drinks and takes dogs, the Thirsty Rambler is a drinks-only stop that welcomes them, and the Half and Half does drinks with occasional food nights. The one to plan around is the Dalesman Country Inn, which is not dog friendly.

The Red Lion is on Finkle Street, just off the top of Main Street, and parking in Sedbergh is the usual story - leave the car at Joss Lane car park and walk round, which takes a couple of minutes. A visit works well alongside the Wednesday Sedbergh market, the artisan markets that run monthly through the summer, or an afternoon at Farfield Mill on the road back towards Garsdale.

Google has it open from midday through to ten every day of the week, but food service times change with the season, so it is worth ringing ahead if you are making the drive down the dale specially.
