The Thirsty Rambler is a bar in Sedbergh, the nearest town to Garsdale, around six miles west down the A684 and roughly fifteen minutes' drive from our self-catering holiday cottages. It serves drinks rather than meals, and it is dog friendly, so it works as a stop for a pint on the way back from the fells with the dog in tow. Eat before or after somewhere that does food, and use the Thirsty Rambler for the drink in between.
The Thirsty Rambler, Sedbergh
A Drinks Stop in Sedbergh
Sedbergh sits at the foot of the Howgill Fells on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the name of the place tells you who it is aimed at. Walkers coming down off Winder, Arant Haw and The Calf end up in the town, and a bar that takes dogs and does not mind boots is a useful thing to have on the list.
For food with your drink, the Black Bull and the Red Lion both do meals and both take dogs, and the Half and Half runs occasional food nights alongside its drinks. The Dalesman Country Inn is the one to avoid if you have the dog with you, because it is not dog friendly.
It is on Main Street, and parking is the same story as the rest of the town, which is to say there is not much of it at the door - Joss Lane car park is the long-stay option and everything in the centre is a short walk from there. Sedbergh is also worth a wander in its own right for the bookshops, the Wednesday market and the artisan markets through the summer.
The one thing to know before you drive down is that it does not open every day. At the time of writing it is shut Monday to Wednesday, opens Thursday evening, runs from late afternoon on Friday and Saturday, and does Sunday afternoon into the evening. Hours move about through the year, so check before you set off.
