The Board Inn, Hawes

The Board Inn is a pub in Hawes, the market town in upper Wensleydale about nine miles east of Garsdale, which is fifteen to twenty minutes' drive from our holiday cottages. It serves meals and drinks, and it is dog friendly, which puts it alongside the White Hart as one of the pubs in town where the dog can come in with you. Hawes is a walking town, sitting on the Pennine Way at 850 feet above sea level, so most of the trade coming through the door has been out on the tops.

Eating and Drinking in Hawes with a Dog

England's highest market town has more pubs, cafes and restaurants than Sedbergh does, and it is worth a day rather than an hour. The Board Inn does both meals and drinks, so it covers an evening out as well as a stop for a pint, and it is a straightforward drive east along the A684 from the dale.

The other dog friendly options in and around Hawes are the White Hart on the cobbled main street, which keeps one of its three dining areas dog-free and welcomes dogs in the other two, Caffè Curva on Market Place for daytime food, and the Green Dragon at Hardraw just outside town, with Hardraw Force reached through the pub grounds.

A visit fits well around the Tuesday market and the craft fairs in the Market House, the Dales Countryside Museum in the old railway station, the Wensleydale Creamery and its cheese experience, or W.R. Outhwaite & Son, the rope makers on the high street.

The Board Inn sits on Market Place in the middle of Hawes, next to where the Tuesday market sets up, so it is easy to find and easy to combine with a morning in town. Food service times move about with the season in Hawes as they do everywhere up here, so ring ahead if you are driving over for a meal.
