The Green Dragon Inn, Hardraw

The Green Dragon at Hardraw is a popular choice about fifteen minutes' drive towards Hawes. It is an ivy-covered inn set below the fells at the head of the dale that takes its name, and it has regular events and a music night on Wednesdays. Hardraw Force, one of the tallest single-drop waterfalls in England, is accessed through the pub - there is a small entrance fee for the waterfall walk, but it is well worth it, particularly after rain, when the falls are at their most dramatic. The walk to the force is fairly flat, well laid out with pathways and some seating, with lovely views as well as the waterfall itself. The Green Dragon sits roughly nine miles east of Garsdale, an easy addition to a day in upper Wensleydale.

The Green Dragon is a 13th-century inn at Hardraw, just outside Hawes in Upper Wensleydale, and it stands in one of the more striking settings of any pub in the Yorkshire Dales. Behind the inn is Hardraw Force, the highest single-drop waterfall in England, a reputed hundred-foot drop that you reach by a short, level ten-minute walk from the pub through three wooden footbridges. The waterfall was used in the 1991 Kevin Costner film "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", and there is a circular twenty-minute walk around the horseshoe upper lip leading to a final bridge overlooking the fall.

The inn itself is an ancient traditional Dales place with flagged floors, open fires, beamed ceilings and stone walls, run as a privately owned free house. There's real ale, gin, and traditional pub food, plus ensuite bedrooms with television, WiFi and tea and coffee making if you want to stay. It sits on the Pennine Way, so walkers pass through steadily. The pub is dog friendly and there is parking on site.
